Five Tips to Buying a Used Car

So you're looking for a used car, but in the back of your mind you just feel like you're going to get ripped off. Well, it doesn't have to be that way! Just remember, be intelligent and follow your gutt feeling. There are plenty of great cars out there if you're willing to do a little homework.

First, you have to decide how much you want to spend. Stick to the budget. It's tempting to think, it's only an extra $30.00 a month. But remember, that's about what a tank of gas will run so you have to be realistic. Before you get to the "I love this car" eliminiate it. Make sure you know how much you can afford and don't go over it.

Second, do some research. There are plenty of places online to find out about the car's history. Services like CarFax only require a VIN. It's going to save you from buying a "great car" that has been in a flood or has a salvage title. Infact, you may want a car with a salvage title, which is fine, as long as it's not a suprise!

Third, take in for a service review. You can see if the outside is in good shape, but the mechanic can check the engine and other vital areas to give you an idea if this car will last a month or the time frame you desire.

Fourth, test drive the vehicle. I'm not sure why anyone would buy a car without taking it for a spin. I'm sure someone is out there, but personally, I've got to know how it feels behind the wheel, to know if I want to spend 30 minutes a day in rush hour with it!

Finally, price negotiations. Look up the price on Kelly Blue Book and see if there are comparable vehicles for sale online. Once you've got a base to work from you'll understand if the asking price is too high. A good rule of thumb is look for the trade in value. If the owner can get that price from a trade in, why would they give it to you for lower. The reason they're selling it personally is because they want more than that! Don't be afraid to put a low ball offer in, again, everyone's situation changes daily, what they wouldn't take yesterday is a welcome offer today. If you can't come to a price and the car is still for sale in a couple weeks, call them up and see if they're willing to take the price, you never know!

Good luck and Happy Car Hunting!
